I hope that people experience me as compassionate, curious, creative, witty, kind, interesting, and interested. If I came close to having a superpower, I think it might be seeing connections among ideas and experiences that others don't immediately see. And, sometimes I'm just dead wrong. Oh, well. Did I mention I have a great therapist?
I'm seldom happier than when I'm traveling internationally, and in church I sing like I'm in the bus and truck tour of Starlight Express. Who knew Balm in Gilead needed jazz hands? Me and Magdalene, that's who!
I'm a lawyer by training, and I also serve as a minister in the United Church of Christ, where I focus on preaching and worship leadership and inventing new ways of causing good trouble. I have a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Graceland University in speech communication and theatre with minors in political science and economics (yeah, I was kind of all over the map), and a juris doctorate from the law school at the University of California at Berkeley (non laude – I was lucky just to get in). I spent the last year of my legal training at Harvard Law School, where I was fortunate enough to participate in the Harvard Project on Negotiation with Professor Roger Fisher and United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. While at Harvard, Justice Breyer supervised my third-year writing project on universal access to the Internet as a human right.
As a lawyer, I worked many years at Warner Bros. Studios where I received parent company TimeWarner’s Andrew Heiskell Award, which the corporation describes as the highest honor for a TimeWarner employee, recognizing contributions to human rights and equality. I have been active in ministry for over 30 years, originally as an ordained minister in Community of Christ, and I consider myself to be a lifelong learner, especially in the area of Process-Relational Theology, which teaches that God is NOT all powerful!
When not focusing on ministry, I am the General Counsel and Chief Corporate Development Officer for American Public Media Group, the country's largest owner-operator of NPR radio stations and a producer of a wide variety of award-winning journalism and audio content. I also help run an NGO, HealthEd Connect, which works with women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa and Nepal on issues of health, education, and advocacy.
Lastly, I am a huge, proud, gay fancy-pants. My preaching is featured in its own YouTube channel that has well over 10 followers.
